New Year, New Hair

By Donna Mae  //  Hair  //  6 Comments

(Sharing my Gensan Gazer column for January 2012.)

Everyone loves a new year because it simply means new beginnings and new ideas to play with, start the year fresh. Try tremendous changes in your hair, explore and experiment. In doing my research with what’s the trend in the year of the water Dragon a lot of them say that it is the year where we must change drastically. If your hair color’s comfort zone is more on the browns this year be more experimental, play with reds and matte.

Here’s one hairstyle that Hollywood’s stars been crazy about, the Ombre hairstyle. Ombre(adjective): French term for shaded. It is a color effect where the color gradually changes from light to dark. Not to be confused with a Spanish speaking male. (from http://www.pinkrickshaw.com)

For ladies who have been coloring their hair and maintaining it, this look is like you’ve gone lazy that you let the roots grow out. It’s darker in the roots and lighter at the ends but with out the harsh lines that separates it. For us Asians, who have brunette hair color this look is very easy to achieve all you have to do is have it highlighted at the ends the more your hair grows the more it looks good. Head out to your favorite salons and talk to your stylist and get your ombre hairstyle.

One hair style that has been around for a very long time is the blowout messy look which is not yet very accepted here in our small town, but let’s do that it this year shall we? This look is the look we often see in celebrities during red carpets, high volume and bouncy with beach waves. Enough with the pin straight hair look, please. If you have naturally wavy hair love it, there are ways to maintain and tame them.

For girls/ladies with very nice bone structure, small face and have long neck try very short hair cut this year. Bob cut and Fringe are still in. But this time fringe is not super bold straight this year the trend is that it should have volume and is more textured.

For guys, trend this year is undercut. You can do a lot of playing, experiments, and ideas with undercut. Grow you’re hair a bit longer then do the under cut. For everyday messy matte look put wax but for a formal look brush your hair up and do a wet look using a gel.

We should have our own style and we just perk it up sometimes to go with the trend. All fashion gurus have one thing to say, “Fashion and Trend fades but Style, is Eternal.” So, find your own style, have fun, explore experiment and work it this 2012.

APHCA International Hair & Makeup Competition

Last November 7, 2011 together with mother Ricky Reyes and 35 Philippine delegates we went to Macau to participate  and compete in the 15th APHCA(Asia Pacific Hairdressers & Cosmetologists Association) International Competition. The venue for the event was at the Venetian Hotel & Convention Center. Three years back the we also joined Ricky Reyes in Guangzhou, China for the same competition my blog post about it: Beauty Tour with mother Ricky.

Ricky reyes Hair & Makeup Competition

The APHCA(Asia Pacific Hairdressers & Cosmetologists Association) participated by 40 different countries all over Asia Pacific some of them are: Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, China, Taipei, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, Australia, Korea, Japan, Mongolia, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Macau, Indonesia and the Philippines. I noticed that their are a lot of countries who joined and participated these year than 3 years ago including 6 from Europe. I saw Spain, Portugal, Germany, Russia, France and many more. According to the organizers the purpose of the competition is to stimulate the cooperation and development among the salon industry players and as a result to unite the Hairstyle and Cosmetology industries in Asia Pacific region and uplift their skills to next level.

Ricky Reyes International Competition

Or very own Ricky Reyes is the president of the association. Every year the Philippines compete in these prestigious international hair competition and we do not go home empty handed. These year Stephani Ilagan won 1st runner up in the Bridal Make-up category, while Nitz, Ester Garcia, Peping de Guzman, Antonio Agustin, Ronald Tuano, Vicente Hisola, Racquel Pangilaga (all from Manila and Luzon) and our very own Giovanni Luage (Expression Salon-ILIGAN CITY) and my brother Daniel Lois Buddy Congson received honorable mentions for various categories such as Evening Hairstyle, Evening Make-up, Bridal Make-up, Cut and Creative Color.

Hair & Makeup Competition

Initially, I went there to be a judge in one of the categories but I became an impromptu model for my brother, Daniel Lois Buddy Congson for the evening make-up and for Peping de Guzman for the evening hairstyle booth gained honorable mentions for their superb work. It was a very different experience for me this year really an eye opening. I learned that models work in these kind of competitions are no joke, they have to bare wearing outrageous outfits, super high heels,  big and heavy head piece, and artistic high fashion hair color and hair style. They need to carry and present the look matched with what the hairstylist or make-up artist envisioned it to be.  No runway walk needed for models here, they just need to stay put and when judges approach them they have to show the work of art make by their hairstylist & make-up artist as creatively as they can possibly do it.

Judging these huge event is very different, they have judges from participating countries and assign them to different categories each of the judges has 10+ lucky cards, and the model who has been given the most number of lucky cards will win the category.

I was really at awe with the creativity of hairstylist and make-up artist coming from different countries and culture.

So, ’til next year we might go to either Korea or Cambodia they’ve yet to finalize who will host 2012 APHCA Hair Olympics

My Brazilian Blowout Experience

By Donna Mae  //  Hair  //  63 Comments

A background about my hair condition and routines. I color my hair monthly because my hair grows really fast. I also had my highlights done last January.  I either have my hair curled or straighten using hair iron every other day. I get a hair treatment once a month. But when I want my soft curls by hair curling iron to last long I don’t get a hair treatment because the drier my hair the longer the curls will last and I love my wavy look especially during events and occasions.

My hair is super chemically treated. I started having my hair straightened and relaxed when I was just 16 years old. Then, Hair Rebonding came I had my hair rebonded once a year sometimes twice a year. Although I don’t have curly hair my hair is what you can describe as frizzy or  ”buhaghag.” Now you know my hair routine and condition you can only imagine how my hair looks like.

I decided not to get Hair Rebonding treatment for about 3 years now because of a lot of reasons:

  • My hair appears PIN straight and very FLAT
  • There are a lot of RESTRICTIONS  (you can not tie your hair, you can not wash your hair for 3 days and you can’t go swimming in the beach)
  • It will take 4 to 5 hours to finish my super LONG hair
  • Rebonding process will leave my hair straight but it also dries my hair
  • After the treatment you need to maintain it meticulously for it to look good.
  • I can not curl my hair as often as I want to
  • My hair is highlighted with bleach and pile and pile of chemical treatments had been done on my hair, if ever i’ll get my hair rebonded there’s a big tendency that my hair will get really damaged worse it will split and cut off.

Then the news about BRAZILIAN BLOWOUT came from my mom. We are having an exclusive hands-on training seminar about it for all our salons. My mom told me that BRAZILIAN BLOWOUT is the treatment we’ve been waiting for because the more chemically treated the more colored your hair is the better the result will be.

I have an inch of re growth so before doing the BRAZILIAN BLOWOUT I had my hair refreshed with color. Daniel and Kimberly my staff from Envy Me Salon & Spa, Robinsons Place Gensan and Hairs & Nails Salon, KCC Gensan branch was assigned to do my hair.

BRAZILIAN BLOWOUT process will only take about 90 minutes compared to 3 to 4 hours in Hair Rebonding.

First, they wash my hair with BRAZILIAN BLOWOUT Anti-Residue Professional Shampoo. Then, they towel dried my hair.

Second, they put the BRAZILIAN BLOWOUT Professional Solution. They Blow dried my hair then hair ironed it with a special iron to seal in the BRAZILIAN BLOWOUT solution .

Then, they rinse my hair and apply the BRAZILIAN BLOWOUT Deep Conditioning Masque. Then applied the BRAZILIAN BLOWOUT Daily Smoothing Serum. Then Blow dry my hair one final time.

Finally, apply the BRAZILIAN BLOWOUT Shine and Shield Spray Shine.

It’s that easy, right? For my hair which is about 24 inches long the whole process only took an hour. Here is my before and after photo.

My fascination with this life changing, break through hair treatment didn’t stop there. After I had the BRAZILIAN BLOWOUT treatment I documented the condition of my hair daily by taking photos. And here they are:

The natural waves of my hair is still here that’s why it looks very natural. BRAZILIAN BLOWOUT is very natural hair treatment. Our hair is made of protein specifically keratin and the BRAZILIAN BLOWOUT we are putting in Keratin and coating our hair with it. Again, this is not a straightening procedure it only creates a protective protein layer around the hair shaft therefore smoothing the cuticles and eliminating frizz.

What is Brazilian Blowout?

By Donna Mae  //  Hair  //  2 Comments

What is BRAZILIAN BLOWOUT? aside from the fact that it is the hottest hair treatment in HOLLYWOOD right now? It is also the most innovative and effective professional smoothing treatment in the world!

BRAZILIAN BLOWOUT is the only Professional Smoothing Treatment that improves the health of the hair. It leaves hair SMOOTH & FRIZZ-FREE WITHOUT harsh chemicals.

Plus with BRAZILIAN BLOWOUT the Hair becomes HEALTHIER & SHINIER. Not pin straight and dry like what  Hair Rebonding does to our hair.

The entire treatment completed in JUST APPROXIMATELY 90 MINUTES. It has NO DOWN TIME! You can wash your hair IMMEDIATELY! NO RESTRICTIONS! You can tie or pull up your hair as soon as you leave the salon! You can wash it off right after the treatment, you can go swimming, you can do whatever you want imagine??

Is it a straightening chemical treatment? NO, BRAZILIAN BLOWOUT is not a straightening product however, your hair will apear straighter because it is smoother and has no more frizz. It is the kind of straight though that’s natural-looking and still has body. Not pin straight lifeless like rebonding, straightening and relaxed hair.

Summer is HERE,a TIP to protect your HAIR

By Donna Mae  //  Hair, Tips  //  2 Comments

Summer is already here and the excruciating heat of the sun also doubled its intensity. Beat the heat and protect yourself from the harsh sunrays this summer. Arm yourself with lotion, moisturizer with UV protection and SPF+30 or higher.  And protect your hair by maintaining its moisture through constant use of conditioner and continuous hair treatments.  Never leave your house with out your shades to protect your eyes. A handy umbrella can also be added in that big bag of yours.

Summer Hair Maintenance

Photo by: Apple Greatson Model: Romarie Ivy Cunanan

A tip for ladies who just had their hair rebonded or colored. If you can’t resist the call to swim in the sea or the pool here are some of the things you can do to protect your hair. We all know that pools have chlorinated waters and the sea has high salt level which can eventually damage your hair especially those who have gone through hair color and rebonding process. I suggest before dipping and swimming in the sea or pool put a leave on conditioner in your hair. And it is very important that you immediately wash off the salt water and the chlorinated water after swimming. Never let your hair be exposed to the heat of the sun with salt or chlorine for long period of time. You could also use a swimming cap to further protect your hair. And again hair treatment is a MUST this summer.

Nothings bad in double dosing your hair treatment this summer go out and do it, your hair deserves it.

Threading-Hair Removal Technique

By Donna Mae  //  Hair  //  4 Comments

For us girls our constant battle is our hair removal every week or twice a month from unwanted places. I’ve been going to salons for a weekly manicure and pedicure service as well as weekly shaving of my eyebrows. I’ve heard a lot about THREADING as a way of hair removal.

THREADING is a technique used by hair removal experts where in they use a white thread loop in together and in a well practiced motion can grab the the hair and eventually pull a fair amount of hair at once.

Threading removes the entire hair follicle, lasting up to 6 weeks. (source)
hair removal threading

If you ask me does it hurt, definitely YES! it’s very painful. But today I conquered my fear of pain, I got my eyebrows thread as well as my mini mustache.  While the very patient and experienced hair removal expert, Abby from ENVY ME SALON was doing her thing in removing my hair I was thinking No Pain, No Gain. But eventually tears rolled down my face. My only consolation was when I saw the end result. It was very cleanly done and it will take a longer time for my hair to grow back again.

The Threading process is just very quick.

hair removal

Here are the list of PRO’s and CON’s I’ve came across while researching about THREADING.

The Pros

  1. It’s extremely sanitary. Nothing but the thread touches the skin, and it’s thrown away after use.
  2. Great for people with ‘trouble’ brows. Threading has this amazing ability to be so concise in the hair that it removes. It’s sworn by people who say they can never get their eyebrows even, despite tweezing, waxing or sugaring.
  3. No chemicals are applied on the skin. When people have certain circumstances, or are taking medicines which conflicts with waxing and sugaring, they can still get threading done.
  4. It’s very fast. Although every technician is different, it takes the person who has threaded my eyebrows two minutes flat, from start to finish
  5. Temporary results can turn into permanent. Over time, frequent threading can cause the hair follicle to become damaged, and stop growing hair.

The Cons

  1. If done incorrectly, the hairs can break. If hair is broken from an inexperienced threading professional, hair re-growth will show up much quicker.
  2. It can be hard to find someone experienced threading hair. It’s a true art that has been passed down through the generations, and isn’t something you can easily learn in a couple classes- especially to do brow shaping. Unless you live in a large metropolitan city, you probably won’t find a salon or spa that does threading.
  3. Some hair growth is necessary. 1/16 inch of hair is needed for thread to wrap around.
  4. Not generally performed on the body, only the face.  (SOURCE)

If you haven’t tried THREADING as an alternative for hair removal go try it now. Hairs & Nails Salon and Envy Me Salon both in Gensan and Davao are offering such services.

L’oreal INOA

By Donna Mae  //  Hair  //  4 Comments

INOA hair color

The future in HAIR COLOR is here the L’OREAL INOA

I colored my hair with L’OREAL INOA today at ENVY ME SALON Robinsons Place Gensan a sister company of Hairs & Nails Salon. I color my hair every six (6) months because by this time my hair re growth will reach up to 2 inches already. And every time I do I always have a minor allergic reaction to the colorant. It’s not a big thing but my scalp will be itchy for at least 3 days.

What does INOA mean? INOA mean INNOVATION, NO AMMONIA

loreal inoa in gensan davao marbel cagayan de oro iligan

But with L’OREAL INOA I did not experience any allergic reaction what so ever  because of it’s revolutionary use of the new Oil Delivery System (ODS) to deliver colour pigments into the hair without the need for ammonia, resulting in shiny, smoother looking hair and a softer feel.

L’OREAL INOA offers UN COMPROMISED COMFORT

  • No Odor
  • Optimized Scalp Comfort
  • Rapid Self-Emulsifying Mix
  • Incredible smooth velvety texture

L’OREAL INOA offers SUPREME RESPECT FOR THE HAIR

  • A well preserved hair fiber color after color
  • Respects the essential amino acids and lipid balance of natural hair
  • Respects the hair’s natural protective film after 1 and 5 application

L’OREAL INOA offers INFINITE HAIR COLOR POWER

  • Sublime Shine
  • Covers 100% gray hair
  • Even colors from scalp to end

SOURCE

Fresh from the L’OREAL INOA seminar we privately had in our salons by Zaida Cayetano, a L’oreal technical director my staff tried the L’OREAL INOA product in my hair which is also due for coloring.

I’ve experience Hair Coloring over the years and is also teaching salon owners and hair stylist how to do it. I was really amazed with L’OREAL INOA because it is truly a revolutionary product. The process is totally different from any other ordinary hair color product.

loreal inoa in gensan davao marbel cagayan de oro iligan

First one dose of Loreal Oleo Gel and one dose of Loreal Oxidant, mixed it. And then they added the L’OREAL INOA colorant. A totally different colorant it’s oil base and looks like the oil we usually put in our instant noodles that orangey oily substance. And then they mix it really well even whipping it until it thickens. The application is also different since it is oil base my stylist have to massage and rub it in the hair.

The result? smooth, shinny and rich colored hair with softer feel. Plus it also smells good. L’OREAL INOA truly the Color of the Future.

loreal inoa in gensan davao marbel cagayan de oro iligan

L’OREAL INOA is now available in all Hairs and Nails Salon and Envy Me Salon branches in Davao, Gensan, Marbel and soon Cagayan and Iligan.

D.I.Y. Curls

By Donna Mae  //  Hair, Tips  //  15 Comments

For a friday or saturday night out what a convenient thing it is if you can curl your own hair.A DO-IT-YOURSELF CURLS is perfect for every lady to have.

curl your hair

Here is my DO-IT-YOURSELF CURLS set.

curl your hair

If I have some event to go to and I do not have time to go to the salon and have my fabulous curls. All I do is this.

From the shower when my hair is still wet. I divide my hair into four parts, two in front and two at the back. Then I slide my hair inside this flexible rods section by section. It’s very easy to do once you get the hang of it, of course everything is hard at first just be patient. Then once the rods are all in place I let my hair dry. I do my make up, dress up etc. Then to be sure I blow dry my hair. Then after I see that my hair is all dried up I pull the flexible rods one by one and.. FABULOUS CURLS.

DO-IT-YOURSELF CURLS set

Try doing it it’s also fun. The DO-IT-YOURSELF CURLS set sells for P500 per set. Contact me if you want one.

Maria Venus Raj the next Miss Universe?

Miss Universe Philippines Maria Venus RajPhoto curtesy of Raymond Saldaña

Maria Venus Raj, Philippines representative to the most coveted title MISS UNIVERSE is wittingly charming her way to the top of the internet polls. A 22 year old government employee and part time model from Bato, Camarines Sur who stands 5 feet 9 inches tall. She fought for her crown because of a citizenship issue but was successfully reinstated.

Maria Venus Raj is a perfect epitome of a modern day cinderella with her movie worthy life story. She is a poor girl that dreamed big.

With her stunning 35-22-35 vital statistics, Filipino-Indian mix, exquisite face, appealing caramel skin tone,  an unmatched determination, engaging wit, captivating charm and charisma she’s now the biggest threat to France’s Malika Menard’s attempt to the title according to  “Premiere,” a French television program.

Filipinos lets pray and cross our fingers that this coming August 24, 2010 Maria Venus Raj will bring home the 3rd MISS UNIVERSE title for the Philippines.

On a side note I have gathered photos of Maria Venus Raj from the images section of Google and found that HAIRSTYLES do chance our look. I gathered photo of Maria Venus Raj with wavy hair, straight hair, tied in pony tail, up do hairstyle and see the difference it made with her face. My personal favorite is when she lets down her hair with a wavy style in the end. For me a wavy hair is more befitting for a Beauty Queen. But towards the end of the coronation night she must do an UP DO HAIRSTYLES in preparation for the MISS UNIVERSE crown. *wink*

By Donna Mae  //  Hair  //  3 Comments

We go to our favorite Salons for a Haircut almost once a month. And their comes a time when we want a totally different look. It’s either we are bored with our HAIRSTYLE or we just want a change. Here are some of the photos I gathered to help you decide on what HAIRSTYLE you want. Find a look or HAIRSTYLE you would love to have and then consult your hairstylist if it will fit you.

Take note if you want to go over the edge make sure you are still comfortable with the HAIRSTYLE you chose. And your HAIRSTYLE should also be base on your lifestyle, personality, work, profession and facial shape.

For medium to long length hairs here are LAYERED HAIRSTYLES you can choose from.

For ladies with LONG & CURLY HAIR here’s for you.

For ladies who love their HAIR SHORT. Here are some celebrities with their SHORT FASHIONABLE HAIRSTYLES.

Asymmetric HAIRSTYLES (short on one side and long in the other side) are “IN” just like that of PINK. Gone are the STRAIGHT Cut hair. YES, they still exist but once KOREAN Fashion and K-POP invaded the Philippines and captured our attention Filipinos embraced the asymmetric HAIRSTYLES. Sometimes this kind of HAIRCUT if you are not really into Fashion you would think it was a HAIRCUT gone wrong. These HAIRSTYLES if styled properly is a major head turner.

For LONG STRAIGHT HAIR here are some HAIRSTYLES for you. And BANGS are coming back also. Their are straight cut bangs and also asymmetric cut bangs. So go and explore your options ladies.

I will do a separate post for MEN HAIRSTYLES.

Armpit HAIR REMOVAL

By Donna Mae  //  Hair, Skin  //  30 Comments

hair remover

I had my ARMPIT WAXED yesterday at ENVY ME SALON & SPA, Robinsons Place Gensan. Their are a lot of HAIR REMOVAL methods now a days. The very common method used in SALONS & SPA is the HOT WAX using EPILIN WAX HAIR REMOVER.

HOT WAX HAIR REMOVAL is where a wax is heated with just the right temperature. When the wax reached it’s right texture and temperature it will be carefully put and spread in the armpit or legs. The wax easily dries up and that’s your que to remove it. In removing the wax the hair attached to it will also be pulled out. So, for first timers brace yourself for this PAINFUL part.

The effectiveness of this kind of HAIR REMOVAL METHOD depends on the right timing, the temperature, the placing and then the removal. If the EPILIN WAX is put in the armpit or legs when it is too hot it can result to skin burn and can cause armpit darkening. But if done the right way the EPILIN WAX can also remove the 1st layer dry skin that causes skin darkening. Deodorant residue can sometimes cause armpit skin darkening but with constant HOT WAXING it can slowly remove that residue.

I like having my HOT WAXING using EPILIN WAX HAIR REMOVER because it slows the hair growth in my armpit area. And not just that the strand of the new hair growth THINS.

I have tried SHAVING (very easy but it thickens the hair ), COLD WAX (takes a very long time to finish) and PLUCKING (had my stiff neck). The best HAIR REMOVAL method for me is HOT WAXING using EPILIN WAX HAIR REMOVER.
